SB 154: Nearly Tripling the Tax on Phones

This bill passed the House 50-20 and the Senate 21-2.

Libertas Institute opposes this bill

Staff review of this legislation finds that it violates our principles and should be opposed.

The state currently charges a “fee” on all phones that is used to fund 911 systems. Senate Bill 154 being run by Senator Wayne Harper increases this “fee” from 9 cents to 25 cents, nearly tripling the tax.

These types of programs should be funded out of the state’s general fund and this type of funding scheme results in an additional tax. The amount of this “fee” should not be raised, let alone exist.
