Staff review of this legislation finds that it is aligned with our principles and merits support.

Personal information held by companies and government can be hacked, leaked, or otherwise exposed. There have been problems in Utah. For example, a few years ago, hundreds of thousands of people had their Social Security numbers and other personally identifying information hacked and exposed.

Representative Travis Seegmiller is sponsoring House Bill 265, which would require government agencies to annually report to the state auditor what personally identifying information they collect.

This information is critical to understand the full scope of how government is collecting, using, and storing this information.
