Public Opinion Poll: Where Do Utah Voters Stand on the Issues?


Libertas Institute surveyed 425 random Utah voters on May 22-23, 2013. Potential survey participants were screened to ensure that they were currently a registered voter in the state of Utah. Sampled voters were contacted and administered a questionnaire over the telephone. The margin of sampling error is ±4.75%.

3. Residents in Highland, Utah recently passed an initiative to require certain businesses to close on Sundays. Similarly, the state of Utah has a law requiring car dealerships to close on one weekend day, and they all choose Sunday. Do you support or oppose these types of laws?



4. The legal blood alcohol limit for drivers is currently 0.08%. The average level for DUI arrests in Utah last year was .14, nearly twice the current limit. Even so, some are proposing reducing the legal limit to .05%. Do you support or oppose reducing the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers?



5. Utah law criminalizes the mere possession of marijuana, and having even a small amount can bring several months in jail time, along with hefty fines. Do you believe that people should be put in prison for the simple possession of marijuana?



6. The Governor’s Office of Economic Development in Utah awards tax incentives to certain businesses in Utah while not giving them to many others, including businesses already located within the state. Do you support or oppose the government using tax incentives to encourage businesses to move to and expand in Utah?



7. Utah is part of the “Common Core” educational standard, yet many parents, teachers, and politicians would like to see Utah remove itself and pursue its own educational standard. Do you support getting Utah out of Common Core?



8. The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides that no unreasonable searches or seizures may be performed without probable cause. Do you believe that the TSA, which searches traveler’s belongings and seizes various items, violates this constitutional protection?



9. According to a report by the Institute for Justice, Utah is the 12th most extensively and onerously licensed state for working in an occupation. Do you believe that construction workers, cosmetologists, plumbers, veterinarians, landscapers, and individuals in other professions should be required to obtain a business license before offering their services to others?



10. Do you believe that the federal government exceeds its constitutional limits?
